Understanding Internal Delays Using MCAP - Royal Brompton & Harefield NHS Foundation Trust

ISSUE

MCAP highlighted delays to discharge on our Respiratory Medicine unit due to Patients awaiting a chest X-ray following a procedure and medical review.

SOLUTION

Guided by the MCAP reviews Ward / Deputy Sisters are now working together with a specific medical care group and radiologist to improve midday discharge and reduce length of stay. X-rays are now being requested first thing in the morning as a matter of priority and reviewed as soon as possible to prevent delays to possible discharge for the Respiratory Medicine patients.

OUTCOME

MCAP data has shown an improvement in the number of patients being discharged before midday as a result of this new initiative. E.g. for the asthma care patients MCAP data increased the of patients discharged pre-midday by 25%.
